Memoria de mis putas tristes
by Gabriel García Márquez

This bittersweet short novel is a sensitive look at growing old and finding love. Its harsh title (Memory of My Sad Whores) belies its nostalgic feel. Told from the point of view of a 90-year-old man who falls in love for the first time, the novel mixes in beautiful notions of aging, beauty, and love with conflicting themes of death, obsession, and self-destruction. Like García Márquez's most famous novel, Cien años de soledad, Memoria de mis putas tristes is not for most readers. But his imagery is sublime and his account of growing old is unforgettable.
