Neverwhere
by Neil Gaiman

This book follows the experience of Richard Mayhew, and unremarkable fellow who is sucked into a dark, shadow version of London that exists beneath the city's streets. Richard soon finds himself in a magical, darker, and more dangerous London than he had previously known. Gaiman plays with the concept of characters ceasing to exist in one world while they appear in others, and idea dealt with by several authors such as Terry Pratchett in Mort. While I didn't find the novel so spectacularly imaginative as some, I enjoyed several parts, particularly the Son of the Morning character.
