Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter books are pretty good. I started reading them before they got big in the U.S., and I liked them. They're not necessarily fine literature, but they're fun books to read with my sibs. The hype surrounding the series and the fans (who border on Star Trek fanaticism) have detracted from a very enjoyable bunch of books. I read this book when it first came out, and to be honest, I didn't like it much. It had too much capitalized print, too much teenage angst, and too many bad choices made by the main characters. The second time around I was able to appreciate what Rowling was trying to do, and I think I didn't like it the first time for the same reasons that I didn't like The Empire Strikes Back the first time I saw it—the bad guys basically win. But that’s the disadvantage of every middle book, and the series is clearly setting up for the final two books. Order of the Phoenix is pretty good, although the more angst-ridden parts still annoyed me. It got me excited to read the new book, and since it’s coming out in about a week, I won’t have to wait too long.
